Specialized Sanitizing Systems
Portable HEPA filters:
Portable HEPA filters are devices that are placed in a room or space and they draw air in and remove 99.97% of particles including viruses from the air.
Upper-Room Ultraviolet (UV) Germicidal Irradiation:
Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) lamps can be installed facing upward toward the top of rooms with a supplemental ceiling fan.
Best used as a supplement with other strategies like increasing supply airflow to reduce concentrations of infectious agents in the air.
Many commercial buildings partially reuse and recirculate the air back through the HVAC system in order to save energy from heating and cooling the outdoor air. Recirculating air poses a risk of moving contaminated air with SARS-CoV-2 from one indoor space to other parts of the building.
An alternative to increasing ventilation rates for highly polluted areas is to add a living wall with active filtration of the air. Living walls use plants to help clean the air of contaminants and pollution, and these systems have been shown to remove Fine Particulate Matter (PM2.5), which is an increased risk factor for mortality from COVID-19. If outdoor air around the building has high levels of air pollution and PM2.5, then a living wall with fan-powered air filtration, can reduce the amount of outdoor air needed. A living wall would need to be combined with other strategies in order to prevent cross-contamination of SARS-CoV-2 within different parts of a building.
